80’s commercial fun with The Jills

I met Jill Kemerer at an American Christian Fiction Writers conference a few years ago. We were finalists in the Genesis contest together, and our other finalist friend called us “The Jills”. The name stuck–and we’ve embraced it! This girl has been a huge support to me and I’m thankful for her. Today we’re celebrating the release of her latest book, Her Small-Town Romance, by analyzing some 80’s commercials and rating them on their “cheese” factor. Hope you have as much fun as we did!

First up is an Enjoli commercial. (Yes, this one’s from 1978 but we’re letting it slide. You’ll see why!)

Jill B. – My review: When I first saw this commercial I felt a little confused. But then the rhythm got to me. I’m proud of her/them because—hello, wash on the line and getting herself dressed? It’s all pretty amazing. Plus, she smells like a woman. I think. And she can dance with a frying pan, so there’s that. On the cheese scale, this one is up there. But I’m docking because I am still confused as to whether this is three different women or one woman. But she/they get extra points for the weird rolling head montage in the middle. I’m not even sure how to describe that awesomeness. Overall I give this one 8.5 on the cheese scale.

Jill K. – My review: Waiting for it to focus… Oh, it’s not going to! The high def technology of the times really is something. A+ for proudly lifting that frying pan Gladiator style. I half expected a “roar” to come out of her mouth. Instead, we got hip-swaying, money-slapping, come-hither staring good times! What was the odd montage, Jill? Who cares? The creepy-sounding French guy more than made up for it. My one complaint? Why is Enjoli only an 8 hour perfume? I guess the ladies working ten hours will have to stink. Overall—9.1!

Second up is a Zest Fully Clean commercial.

Jill B. – My review: I feel like someone has been watching me. I mean, this is how I always bathe, with the kicking legs and the jumping around. It’s all just a little eerie for me. I’m going to have to give this one a 5 one the cheese scale simply because it’s just too true to life for me.

Jill K. – My review: I’ve seen dogs get less water all over the bathroom than that lady! Why is she making such a mess?? When the guy’s head popped up, I was sure he was going to roar, but nope. Now let me get this straight, the lady in the shower thought she looked clean? With her dry hair, I figured she needed a shower. I don’t like the mind games she’s playing. If I could grade it on the towel snaps, cymbals and perm-guy’s scary grin alone, I’d give it an eight, but I’m docking it for the psychological games. It’s a 7.0 for me.

And our third and final bit of fun…Tab’s Got Sass commercial.

Jill B – My review: Before this commercial even starts, I’m in. Why? Because they’re telling me Tab has sass. And for me, anything that has sass is an instant plus. Here’s why this commercial is a 9.5 on the cheese scale: Overalls, with, is that jean on jean? Marvelous. Old people dancing. A random woman in a swimsuit running by some guy with a flag. And then the woman in the swim cap. Where did that come from? It’s just a great mix of crazy and I love it. Tab truly does have sass and they end it with a flip. #nailedit

Jill K. – My review: Jill B., I’m in too! I mean, this commercial has it all! Yeah, Tab’s got sass! But it also has a silhouette of a girl chugging that Tab, dancing grandpas, an outdoor shower with a guy in jeans—wait, why is a guy on the beach in jeans? Hmm… Never mind! Then we have a flapper, a waitress right out of Mel’s Diner (is she related to Flo? Maybe. Maybe not), a blue-headed woman, a bikini-clad lady running through a gym with her beach towel waving like a flag, and a woman in overalls! Yes!! Yes!! I give it a 9.5 also!

*deep sigh* That was fun. Thanks for joining us. Feel free to rank your favorite commercial in the comments or join the conversation on my Facebook page.

Jill has a new Love Inspired book, Her Small-Town Romance, in stores right this very minute. Don’t miss it! I had the chance to read this one early, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. All the feels! Five out of five stars and no cheese factor. 🙂 Get the details below.
